Matalonga Jorge (ArtWorks Together)
Lisbon-based artist Matalonga Jorge uses drawing as an exploration tool for constant learning. Drawing is a way to recreate her inner world. Matalonga currently works as a High School Visual Arts teacher and an advocate for Inclusive Education.
Artworks South Yorkshire is a non profit creative arts organisation, inspiring and supporting adults with learning disabilities, autism or both to achieve their full artistic potential and develop important life skills through creative workshops and placements. At YVAN, we have partnered with ArtWorks Together to support the International Exhibition.
Why do you create?
New explorations and self growth are the main reasons why I create. Drawing has always been an exploration tool for constant learning, personal growth and introspection. There is a search for detail and movement in all my compositions.
Do you consider yourself to be part of an artist network/community, and if so, how does this impact your practice?
No. I have always worked alone and yet, the few times that I had the possibility to share my work with other artists/creators, their influence is something that improved myself and consequently my artwork. To meet other artists that share the same values as inclusion and sustainability would be just amazing!
What changes would you like to see in the arts sector?
More openness to new creators with initiatives that allow them to share their work, in order to be accessible to everyone, without discrimination.
