Sarah Joseph (BTO2 on Tour)
Sheffield-based Sarah Joseph-Dasent is an established Trinidadian artist who has been exhibiting consistently for over 25 years in her home country and abroad. She is known for her vibrant layers of organic transparencies and her bold use of colour.
Beyond the Obvious 2 On Tour // Rotherham showcase is a continuation of our Beyond the Obvious publication. With artworks from 11 artists from the global majority, the Riverside Gallery is open for you to come and view the incredible pieces being shared. It acts as a “Sector Snapshot” that highlights the lived experience of artists from the global majority in the Yorkshire and the Humber region.

Do you consider yourself to be part of an artist network/community, and if so, how does this impact your practice?
The community of artists/friends that I rely on for support and encouragement are fundamental for my expression and growth. In the UK I have found mutually beneficial mentorships and friendships within the two groups that I belong to, the Peak District Artisans and Walkley Edge Artists.
What changes would you like to see in the arts sector?
I would like to see more appreciation for the arts especially at the Primary and Secondary school levels, where I’ve been told that creative arts studies are often cut in favour of more academic subjects. I believe that there should be room for both in order to foster a well-rounded society.
