A few people were looking for an arts workspace or exhibition space and some were familiar with the artists in the exhibition. Her work is informed by a body of ongoing research covering such areas as Feminist theory, Hysteria, witchcraft, fairy tales, gender performativity and performance. Her current work explores dissonant dualities between both the objectification and visibility of women in the media through meticulous collage interventions of found fashion magazine images. The Quarantine Collage Series is an ongoing body of work reconfiguring fashion model images of women from popular lifestyle magazines. Once completed, it will take the form of 100 handmade paper collages produced within the lockdown and quarantine periods in Britain during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020-2021. The selected fashion model is rendered as a faceless mannequin, erasing their former identity. Entire planes of their body are replaced with a variety of images of photographic textures and surfaces such as hair, chocolate, plants, clothing, interior house plans, window blinds, toilet paper, stone, bubble wrap, household waste and laminate flooring. The son of a shoemaker from the Dalit or untouchable caste, through art, Manish questions the injustices inflicted upon minorities and the lived experiences of vulnerable populations in all societies around the world. His work traverses the east and the west, casting iconic images from religion to pop culture, smoothly embedding them in one canvas to create bold, beautiful and thought-provoking paintings. His main medium of expression is painting using oil, acrylic and mixed media with techniques tending toward Superflat. Inspired by Nepali art traditions of Thangka and Paubha, Manish also borrows styles from graphic novels, especially manga and popular superhero comics. He calls it the ‘Thang-Su-flat’ technique. I work in textile sculpture, taking techniques used in historically domestic situations and applying them to structures that are freer and more playful than practical. I am currently the CEO of YVAN after spending some time on the Board. I also work as the Operations Manager in a community centre, conference centre and Church of England church. Remove competition. Lets support each other, work together and create positive change. Affordable and productive studio spaces for creatives who will make time to use them. What are your future aspirations as a visual artist and have you got anything coming up you’d like to share? I did quit all my voluntary and paid positions to be a full time artists- its not easy!! The lure of regular income is a big distraction. My intention was and still is to create a body of work that would enable me to have a solo exhibition. I have a piece in the 'Soft Ontology of Things' online exhibition and catalogue from the Take Two Fibre Arts Course, Soft Revolution led by artist Tina Marais. As a visual artist, I explore how personal and cultural stories can be told through objects, memories, and local spaces. My practice is deeply reflective and grounded in collaboration and community, shaped by a desire to create work where people feel genuinely seen and where their histories are honoured. I’m drawn to the ways environments leave marks on us and how we, in turn leave marks behind. 'Yake illa?’ This is a very Bangalore way of saying ‘why not?’ in Kannada. Creativity isn’t separate from my life, it flows through the everyday. It’s having ideas, noticing problems and instinctively imagining solutions, composing a one-minute film from a passing moment on the bus, or looking at a blank wall and seeing a mural already living there. When I first came to England nearly ten years ago, I dreamed of being part of a creative community. I have a quite a few. But here’s my top three. I’d love to do more collaborative work with artists and some place-based residencies where I’,m embedded as an artist in a community, exploring and connecting with whatever the outdoor environment is there and the people around that. I would love a studio in a community outdoor space. I don’t have a studio at the moment- I just work from home and it’s sometimes quite restricting as I can’t make larger stuff and the house gets taken over by natural materials everywhere. I’d love to have a mobile making station that can pop-up in different places for making and chatting. I’ve explored this in the town centres of Sheffield and Rotherham and I’ve really enjoyed that! I did it as part of my Rotherham ROAR residency. I’d love to learn more basketry skills, how to spin flax and nettles so that I can display my work without any trace so it can go back to the land. Coming up I’m going to be working with Flux in Rotherham delivering some creative walks over the summer. I’m also delivering outdoor creative sessions for families that are affected by cancer with my colleague, Woodland Wellbeing, and that’s part of a some work supported by Weston Park Charity. I have a solo exhibition coming up in May called Identity. Through this, I'm piecing together my thoughts on identity and personality. The exhibition asks why we change our personality in different situations, and whether this is always for justifiable reasons. Just as the artworks are stitched together, the viewer pieces together their thoughts on these pertinent questions. Viewing the layers of fabric, we are reminded of the layers of the self, and must question whether our true self is ever truly revealed. The slow lane! Frequently, arts is a quick coffee, a busy art event, lots of info in a short timeframe. In contrast, one of my favourite community experiences was a weekly open invitation to make bread. People came from all areas of the community, chopped wood, fired the ovens, mixed and kneaded dough. Absolutely. In 2022 I joined Doncaster Creative Network in my hometown, and it changed my life. Along with my now good friend Natasha Clark, who founded DCN, this has been a huge part of inspiring new work, reflecting on projects and ideas, collaborating and generally improving my mental health massively. The programme has really made me reframe how I see public art, not just in terms of design processes but also on a personal level. I explore stimming as a way of interpreting landscape, through drawing and animation. The Venus Eye Trap is about my difficulty with eye contact. For me eye contact is so intense, it’s like getting an electric shock. There is an element of compulsion about it. I’ve always created. But also, I think particularly with embroidery there is something monotropic* about the repetition. You’re working stitch by stitch and you just lose yourself in this feeling of “flow”. The drawing was made with watercolour, beeswax and black gouache. In the process all the drawing appears when I dig the gouache, is like a metaphor, has I am digging myself to learning to unmask and be free of some the behaviors that are only important for other people to feel more comfortable around me. I found in intuitive abstract drawing a way to share deep emotions that can’t be explained by words. A textile installation which will pave its way around the walled wildflower garden in Crows Nest Park. Parents – primary caregivers in particular – face specific challenges, whether they are working in academia, the commercial sector or for public institutions. By creating a network, connecting parents across every sector of the artworld, we allow our members to identify whether the challenges they have faced are part of a wider structural pattern. Parents working in the visual arts are often invisible to one another, not least because so much networking happens in the early evenings when those with children are less able to attend events.
