Grimsby: Beyond the Obvious - Action Research Workshop - 20th April 2024

Join us at a Beyond the Obvious - Action Research Workshop in Grimsby.

Saturday 20th April 2024, 14:30-17.30

Our Big Picture Ltd, 17-21 Bethlehem Street Grimsby, NE Lincolnshire, DN31 1JN

As part of a small group of creatives, we will work through a series of exercises and creative activities to uncover how we describe and label both ourselves and each other.

Explore ways in which we can deconstruct barriers to help us collectively thrive in the arts sector. Get ready to share insights and knowledge, go beyond the obvious and create actions for change!

This workshop is perfect for artists. makers, arts workers and creative practitioners based in Yorkshire and the Humber. It is in person and limited to 14 people so sign up through the link below!

Background

The research coming from these workshops is part of a larger part of research we are doing across Yorkshire and the Humber. The YVAN Research and Learning Working Group, decided to explore the issues raised in the Beyond the Obvious 2 snapshot project, providing agency to the region's Global Majority artists and arts workers to reflect on their experiences of the education and cultural institutions.

The action research is being toured around parts of the region where YVAN has little presence or active connections, to ask the creative sector to explore some of the key provocations coming from the BTO2 publication. So far we have toured in locations in Sheffield and Rotherham with our next location after Grimsby to be Bradford.

The Key provocations are:

  1. How are we, as creatives, able to thrive independently?

  2. What categories and labels are assigned to you?

  3. What do you want to share about your personal self as a creative, with whom and how much? (relates to intersectional data collection by organisations)

  4. What are the changes we need to make to bring equity of opportunity and recognition?

  5. Where do you look for professional and/or creative support?

Accessibility

The workshop will take place in Project Lab space at Our Big Picture. It is on the ground Floor and wheelchair accessible from the highstreet. There is 1 unisex toilet which is in an outbuilding, currently not accessible for wheelchair users. However, the building has portable ramps. There are parking options nearby. Our Big Picture are located on a busy highstreet but havent had any issues in the past with excessive noise. The organisers can accomodate for a quiet space during breaks if needed.

If you have any access needs, any questions or would like further information please email: info@yvan.org.uk
